Daune Horton Rutledge

1897 - 1919

Daune Horton Rutledge was born on April 15, 1897, in Lockwood, Ohio, to Mr. and Mrs. Ira T. Rutledge. The family moved to Robeline, Louisiana, in 1908. Rutledge graduated from Robeline High School in 1912 and moved to Broomfield, Ohio, shortly afterward. In 1914, he returned to Louisiana and entered LSU where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and lettered on the football team. He left LSU in 1918 before graduating to join the Naval Aviation Corps and received some of his training at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was later sent to Key West, Florida, and was commissioned an ensign in December 1918. He was killed in a plane crash on February 7, 1919 in Pensacola, Florida. Rutledge was buried in Robeline on February 10, 1919.
