Julian Bowles Sanford

1881 - 1918

Julian Bowles Sanford was born on August 27, 1881 to William Thornton Sanford and Julia Bowles Hoy Sanford at Cordelia Plantation in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. On September 16, 1896, he entered LSU and majored in chemistry. Sanford graduated in 1900 with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry and enlisted in the United States Army shortly afterward. On May 10, 1917, Sanford entered the training school at Fort Logan H. Roots near Little Rock, Arkansas, and was soon sent to Camp Pike, Arkansas. He was then ordered to take command of the Students Army Training Corps (SATC) at Mississippi Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Mississippi State University) and was later sent to command the SATC at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Sanford passed away on October 11, 1918 in Ohio. The exact cause of death was unknown, but was likely due to influenza, pneumonia, and bronchitis. His body was returned to Baton Rouge and is buried in Magnolia Cemetery.
