ENGL 2148.002

Critical Paratext

Our object from Hill Memorial Library consisted of John Earle Uhler newsletter papers published ranging from 1921 to 1960. The majority of the documents in one folder were merely programs to the Shakespearean plays that were performed. The second folder contained a mass of letters written by the Shakespeare Society of New Orleans, which were intended for the LSU professor inviting him to celebrate the anniversary of Shakespeare. Our group’s creative interpretation of these documents is to incorporate the ideas of these folders to the Shaxtravaganza event, our professor, Dr. Barrett, is organizing. The first documents, which are the letters written by the Shakespeare Society of New Orleans, is the personal initiation to the birthday party. We plan to write our own invitational letters written from our group, Shakespeare Society of Louisiana State University (LSU) to invite our Shakespeare class and others interested to the Shaxtravaganza event. Our second piece of work will be a program for the Shaxtravaganza event. It’ll be our interpretation of the description of the events going on at the Shaxtravaganza event. Since the program seems very simple and straight to the point, we plan to interpret a timeline of events that will happen during the event. The program will consist of details on the the overall event, including, who it is for, where and when it will be held, along with the menu included in the celebration.  Our last piece of the project will be a power point consisting of the majority of works in the folders we were presented.  In order to keep the power point’s content as authentic as possible, we used pictures we took ourselves of the original documents from Hill Memorial. The letters will be displayed in envelopes marked with the year they were written. If you click the envelope, the envelope will open and display the entire letter of that year. For our pamphlets, we will have them on display with an old time theater as the background. A stage will be the background and there will be seats facing the stage. When you click on the pamphlet, the cover, inside, and the back of the pamphlet will be on display for the viewer.
