Reimagining Hamlet |
In the Hill Memorial Library on the Louisiana State University campus, in the Shakespeare collection resides a copy of William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. This book was published by High Wycombe, and printed exclusively for the members of the Limited Editions Club by Hague and Gill in 1933. The Limited Editions Club was founded in 1929 by George Macy and they were located in New York. Their purpose was to publish finely made and illustrated limited editions of classic literature. There are a couple of places that have collections from the club, including for example; the Library of Congress, the Harry Ransom Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin, and The Nashville Public Library. This edition of Hamlet took a... |

Reimagining "A Midsummer Night's Dream" |
The Ben Greet Shakespeare for Young Readers and Amateur Players: A Midsummer Night’s Dream can be found at Louisiana State University’s Hill Memorial Library. This book is relatively small and measures seven and one half inches long and four and three fourths inches wide. This book has a hard cover. The front cover of the book has a dark green color and features tooling above and below the title. The tooling appears to be a student performing at the discretion of a teacher. The title: The Ben Greet Shakespeare for Young Readers and Amateur Players: A Midsummer Night’s Dream is inscribed in an easy to read, metallic gold colored font. The backside of the front cover and the corresponding right page both feature a print of a painting of a forest,... |

Redefining Shakespeare |
Roses, written by William Shakespeare (1564-1616), part of an early American lithographic gift book series, can be found in the Laughlin Collection at the Hill Memorial Library on Louisiana State University’s campus. The Hayes Lithographing Company published this book in the city of Buffalo in New York. Although the exact date of when the book was produced is unknown, we assume it to be around the 1900s. The book itself is a little worn, but it is in fairly good condition. The spine of the book is somewhat torn, but shows that it has been able to withstand many years of use. The book is rather small and has painted roses on the front cover. Roses contains a white leatherette cover that has a pebbly texture. The cover of the book is marked with a yellow, maybe... |

New York Times Celebrates Shakespeare |
Group 4: Descriptive Account of New York Times tercentenary special edition (PR2923 1916 .N4 MAP) We are exploring a newspaper from 100 years ago published by the New York Times, dedicated to celebrating the tercentenary of Shakespeare. This tercentenary celebration covered a series of newspapers published by The Times from February 20th 1916 through to April 23rd 1916, and the paper we have here is the first one in this line. We know that by nature of being a newspaper this item was intended for the general public, however we do not know who was in possession of this exact copy before it reached here in Louisiana. It was more preserved for content rather than being a particularly special item. The pages of this... |

Making Of A Tragedie |
Our object is on The Tragedies of Hamlet Prince of Denmarke. It was edited by J. Dover Wilson LITT. D. from the text of the second Qvarto, which was printed in 1604-1605. The center of the book contains Shakespeare’s actual words that have been translated in Latin, French, and English. The physical appearance of the book starts with a plain light grey hardcover with no title. The book’s size is about the size of an average laptop, so it is harder to travel around with. The texture of the book feels rough. The inside of the book contain pages that have illustrations and the text style is like old English text and the writing style is like terse style in which few words contain a lot of meaning. The only color in the book besides black are the red words on the top... |

HamTV |
Hamlet: A Television Script is a tall thin script bound like a book. The work was published in 1954. This item is more of a book than a script. It even contains illustrations like a book. This is something more for personal enjoyment rather than the actual script of an actor. The cover is white with red and black writing. The illustrations are by Ben Shahn and depict different scenes and characters every few pages. All of the illustrations are done in black with simple lines resembling brush strokes. Something to note is the lack of page numbers as well as line numbers, something any regular script requires. This script was adapted for the CBS television series Hamlet, which aired in 1959. The odd things about this book is the fact that the title claims that it is a... |
